Cabinet is being asked to set the ball rolling for the regeneration of Perry Barr district centre by accepting the first phase of the Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocation, which will then be used to unlock growth in the area.
A report due to go before cabinet on March 22 asks councillors to accept £1.9 million Stage 1 funding from the total £3.5 million LGF allocation, to fund three key projects. These projects will then enable further development and regeneration to take place in Perry Barr, in line with a draft development framework which is being prepared to guide development opportunities in the district centre.
These are:
- Infilling of subways between Birmingham City University and the One Stop shopping centre to create a safer and more attractive direct route for pedestrians and cyclists, for which £600,000 from the £1.9 million has already been approved by cabinet member for development, transport and the economy Cllr Tahir Ali and cabinet member for commissioning, contracting and improvement Cllr Stewart Stacey.
- Improving public transport, including replacing the existing bus interchange outside the One Stop shopping centre and, in the longer term, improving bus and rail facilities by providing a new integrated public transport hub.
- Land assembly at Gailey Park, including the acquisition of property in order to facilitate the redevelopment of an important large site.
Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for transport, development and the economy, said: “This scheme is about driving the process of making Perry Barr a more attractive place for people to live, work and travel. By accepting this first phase funding, we are setting the wheels in motion for this to happen.
“This LGF funding means we can proceed with these three projects, which will, in turn, enable us to move forward with the further development and regeneration planned for Perry Barr district centre.”
